Our formula has been changed! Our Elderberry is double extracted, undergoing both a decoction, as well as extracted in alcohol and vegetable glycerin.
This time we decided to make a very high potency extract combining elderberry, along with a high ratio of herbal antivirals such as Skullcap baikalensis, Cordyceps, Reishi, Shiitake and Maitake. These herbal antivirals are incredibly immune-supportive while being renowned for being respiratory tonics. All of our mushrooms are 100% certified organically grown in Washington state, where we use both fruiting body and mycelium.
This is not your common Elderberry syrup!
This is extra potent, and vegan. We don't use honey like classic formulations, instead, we use organic vegetable glycerin (VG) and organic cane alcohol along with having a high ratio of a high potency extract of herbal antivirals to exalt the immune protective potential.
We chose vegetable glycerin (VG) for our Elderberry Immune Elixir over honey or sweeteners like traditional recipes, for several reasons:
- VG has a sweetness to it, but contains no sugar and therefore makes our elderberry syrup completely sugar-free, and safe for diabetics and vegans.
- Our elderberry syrup travels just as easily as our tonics and elixirs... just pop it in your bag and go! VG allows for it to be shelf stable, therefore it does not require refrigeration.
- While we absolutely think the honey or agave ones are quite a treat, we find that if you're doing truly medicinal doses of 4-6 teaspoons per day at the first sign of illness, the sugar adds up.
Medical Research:
Skullcap baikal* as its a powerful antiviral, with extensive medical research confirming its ability to inhibit viral replication, suppress viral gene expression, inhibits/reduces cytokine cascades, and viricidal actions against influenza A (H3N2) and B viruses
Cordyceps* is an adaptogenic mushroom known for its "anti-influenza effect." The extract is thought to be driven by increased natural killer cell activity along with other virus-killing cytokines. In addition, cordyceps have been shown to improve lung health by decreasing inflammation in both chronic asthma and other lung diseases.
Maitake* mushroom extract was found to significantly inhibit the influenza A virus from replicating, and it stimulated the production of antiviral cytokines such as TNF-alpha. Interestingly, it was made even more powerful when combined with shiitake mushroom extract.
Shiitake* mushrooms have been shown to have antiviral activities against the hepatitis C virus, herpes simplex virus, and human immunodeficiency virus as well as influenza. When specifically studied on influenza, shiitake was found to inhibit the growth of the virus by preventing the entry and uncoating process of viral infection.
Reishi* another antiviral powerhouse fungus is the woody, and therefore inedible, reishi mushroom. Reishi has been recognized as a medicinal mushroom for thousands of years. Reishi has the ability to combat many viruses, such as herpes, Epstein-Barr, and hepatitis. It has also been found to be effective in killing influenza A virus, which causes many outbreaks of flu throughout the season, including the very virulent and dangerous H1N1 strain of flu.

Suggested use:
For regular consumption 1tsp a day is good, when you experience the early stages of a cold or flu, take 4-6tsp throughout the day. Add to water, juice, tea, baked goods, etc. (Children: Ages 4 and up: 1/2 teaspoon daily. Ages 1-3: ¼ teaspoon.)
Elderberry is meant to be high-dosed when you’re exposed to a bug, and you feel the onset of symptoms. This is why we really chose to do sugar-free, (like all of our formulas!) because sugar feeds the potential pathogens. The dosage is variable as it depends if you're using it for ongoing resilience and protection, or when you "hit" with something.
